Mossberg 940 Pro Featuring Jerry Miculek | 12 Gauge Shotgun Review

Today is a special day ladies and gentlemen - I'll be taking an in-depth look at the Mossberg 940 lineup (The Field, JM Pro, and Waterfowl editions) with the legend himself: Jerry Miculek. Let's go!!! Be sure to check out his channel (HERE)

• The 940 Pro and 940 JM Pro come in between $900-$1,000 

 Quick Specs

• All 12 gauge, All 3 inch 
• All gas driven
• 28"  Barrell EXCEPT the JM Pro is 24"
• All come in around 7 pounds 
• Length of Pull adjustable from 13" to 14 1/4" 
• Comb and Heel are also fully adjustable
• All run the Accuchoke system 
• JM Pro comes with a magazine tube
• Chrome lined chamber and barrel

Ergonomics/Look & Feel

• The redesigned 940 has a smaller forend with more aggressive checkering for an improved grip
• Pistol grip is nicely sized and textured
• All controls are flawless and oversized
• There is a cocking indicator in the trigger group
• Magazine follower comes flush with the receiver to prevent finger pinching. It is also brightly colored  
• Loading port is milled out and very smooth
• All are standard with a top tang safety making mounting while putting the gun on fire much more efficient 
• Field model is drilled and tapped for optic use
• Waterfowl 940 and the standard 940 have a hi-vis sight on it - JM Pro has interchangeable light-pipes
• All have anti-corrosive stainless steel return springs and stock mechanics with a water drain 

Trigger 

• All triggers came in around 5.5 pounds - The "over travel" is adjustable by a screw on the JM Pro - Very cool
• The triggers have an extra coating for a more confident pull

Ease of Breakdown

• We broke down the 940 waterfowl edition
• There are a lot of unique parts different than any other shotgun I'd ever seen
• It was interesting the breakdown the gas system and understand a bit more how Mossberg is achieving lighter recoil
• This new version of their gas piston system claims 1500 rounds before cleaning. This thing definitely runs clean!
• The piston of the 940 waterfowl travels a much shorter distance to cycle the gun resulting in fewer breaking parts
• But if parts break, they're all easy to work on or replace

Recoil and Reliability

• All the 940's shot flawlessly. Recoil was minimal right back into the shoulder, and all shot from every position. Not much else to say!
• The 940's have a spring loaded compensating system in the gas system on top of the piston which helps bleed out excess gas therefore reducing recoil 

Speed Shooting

I find this evaluation valuable because it tests how all the different aspects of a shotgun come together from getting on target, having an appropriate trigger pull, recovering from the recoil, and getting back on target. 

• The fastest time I could accomplish with only a few attempts with the 940 was a 1.24
• Jerry got a blazing 1.17!

In conclusion, This is definitely my favorite review to date - It was such an honor to have Jerry walk through the Mossberg 940 lineup with me. These guns performed awesomely and I learned a lot in the process!
